When compassion leads to recognition

Compassionate, graceful, full of integrity, and committed are some words used to describe Digna Kincaid. At the 2026 annual Navigator Retreat, those qualities received special recognition when Digna was named Covering Kids and Families (CKF) Rookie of the Year, a statewide recognition.

The Rookie of the Year award recognizes Certified Indiana Navigators who have been in the field for one year or less and that has shown impact. A CKF Navigator helps Hoosiers understand and navigate healthcare coverage, but Digna’s work reaches beyond explaining options or completing applications. As part of Open Door’s CKF program, she brings kindness and personal attention to every interaction. “Digna is an invaluable asset to our team,” said LaKeyta Barnes, Open Door’s CKF Coordinator.

Digna consistently goes the extra mile for everyone she works with. She approaches each family with empathy, patience, and sincerity. Digna says, “For me, it’s not just about completing an application or checking something off a list. It’s about the person sitting across from me and knowing that I was able to help make their day a little easier.”

Feeling heard and supported can make a complicated process less overwhelming. That is the kind of trust Digna has built with every family. Her dedication and genuine care make her an exceptional Navigator, but she also finds the work satisfying. “Working with CKF has been such a rewarding experience for me. What I love most is being able to help families and make the process of finding and understanding health coverage a little easier for them,” Digna said.

Digna is especially passionate about helping Spanish-speaking families navigate their options. She takes time to explain changes that may affect their ability to get or keep benefits, helping families feel informed rather than overwhelmed. “I especially enjoy being able to help Spanish-speaking families in their own language and make sure they feel heard and supported,” she shared.

That same level of care reaches her coworkers, especially when the work is difficult. “Her ability to lift the team’s spirits and bring laughter—especially on challenging days—helps create a supportive and enjoyable environment for everyone,” LaKeyta said.

For Digna, winning Rookie of the Year is not an ending, but rather an encouragement to keep doing the work she loves. “Receiving Rookie of the Year was such an exciting experience. I’m grateful to be recognized, but I’m even more grateful for the opportunity to do work that I truly care about,” Digna exclaimed.
