Better processes = More meaningful connections

Employee Spotlight | Samantha Blake, RN

Words like workflows, metrics, and process management may seem unusual for a health center. But for Samantha Blake, RN, Open Door’s new Director of Clinical Operations, they’re powerful tools that can lead to greater satisfaction for patients and employees alike.

Samantha has been a nurse for more than 11 years, mostly in and around the emergency department at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. She’s progressively taken on leadership roles and has a knack for seeing how process improvements in individual departments can have a big impact on the overall healthcare experience.  She joined Open Door in August 2025.

“Each day in healthcare requires a lot of patience, compassion, and in-the-moment decision-making,” says Samantha. “When our processes are working smoothly, we have more time and energy to connect with our patients and fellow team members in meaningful ways. Those connections are what drew most of us to healthcare in the first place.”

Samantha enjoys helping staff members see how their choices and actions contribute to the mission and culture of the organization. She is intentional about leading with vulnerability, meeting people where they’re at, and giving lots of praise and support. “In these first few months, it’s been most important for me to listen, soak in as much as possible, and try to build trust. I want staff to know we’re in this together.”

Open Door’s environment is just what Samantha was looking for in a forever home.  Although she appreciated past roles and experiences, she found her new work hours a better fit for her life as a mom. An addition to the change in schedule, Samantha was attracted to Open Door’s commitment to removing barriers for patients whenever possible.

“Early on in my adult life, I was in a place where I needed assistance. I believe I can understand what people are going through,” she said. “I love how Open Door goes out of its way to connect people with supports like WIC, community health workers, help with health insurance, and even taking assistance out into the neighborhoods.”

When she’s not at work, Samantha keeps busy with her two daughters. She also volunteers at local churches, Habitat for Humanity, and school community events, and makes homemade bread for a local farmer’s stand that is “take as you need.”
