Updated May 19, 2022. This post will continue to be updated as booster updates are released from the CDC.

The CDC recommends the following people SHOULD receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster:

Ages 18+ who received Pfizer or Moderna as their initial series, and who completed the initial series at least 5 months ago

Ages 5-17 who completed their initial Pfizer series at least 5 months ago

Ages 18+ who received Johnson & Johnson (J&J) as their initial vaccination at least 2 months ago

Boosters do NOT need to be the same brand as the original shot(s). Anyone age 18+ may choose any of the brands. (Ages 12-17 must receive Pfizer.)

Additionally, as of Mar. 30 2022, select groups are eligible for a second booster:

  • Individuals age 12 and older who have weakened immune systems and individuals age 50 and older who received a booster dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) at least four months ago are eligible for a second booster.

  • Adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least four months ago may now receive a second booster dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

(Please note that a booster is different from the 3rd additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna recommended for immunocompromised individuals. The 3rd dose of Moderna or Pfizer for immunocompromised individuals can be administered 28 days or more after the original 2-dose series is complete.)
