Did you know that 58,000 people are injured each day in their home? The month of June is Home Safety month and Open Door Health Services wants to help you make your home as safe as possible.
Here are some basic safety measures to begin with:
- Make sure there is a smoke alarm in every bedroom. Individuals have a 50% better chance of survival if their house has a smoke alarm.
- Test smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries once a year.
- When cooking, always stay in the kitchen and wear oven mitts when handling hot food products.
- Remember to wear fitted clothing when cooking, so that you are least likely to cause a fire.
- Be sure to keep house cleaners, medicines, and other toxic substances away from children in locked cabinets.
- If you suspect someone in your house has swallowed a poisoning, call the Poison Control Center 1-800-222-1222.
- To prevent children from choking, keep small objects such as hard candies away from children’s reach.
- Always watch your children when they are swimming or near water.
- Have proper water devices available for children who need to wear lifejackets and keep them nearby so that they are easy to reach.
To be prepared for an emergency, keep a list of emergency numbers on your refrigerator. Also, keep a basic first-aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries, medical information, and extra medicine in a convenient container and location. Remember, following these simple guidelines will help protect the ones you love!
